Dickinson had a long term relationship with the influential critic Thomas Wentworth Higginson and she gave him poems throughout her lifetime.
Dickinson wrote at least 1800 poems in her lifetime. Only between seven and ten (different sources state different numbers; most agree on eight as a figure) of these poems were actually published while she was alive. Most of these appeared in the Springfield Republican. Her work is mainly published posthumously.
