Provisional Notes Acrimonious divorce from her first husband, who was allegedly violent towards her, which dragged on for many year before it was finally granted and was widely reported in the press. It was described in The Critic as "perhaps the worst ... that ever was reported in the English press" (cited in Pilgrim, vol.8, 361n). It was after this time that she began to write.
