She started writing poetry at the age of 42. May have been inspired by the literay activity of her son in law Pieter Boddaert. He also published her work after she died.

Grandchildren and further descendants of daughter Johanna Margaretha continued the name Rethaan, using the last name Rethaan Macaré.
