Daughter of Charles Menard and Anne Bonne Portier, a creole of Santo Domingo. She married a Basque barrister, Victor Ségalas, but made as a precondition of her marriage her right to develop her literary talents unhampered by her husband's marital authority. Married at 15, according to Montferrand, p.39
